Why Tile Looks Different At Home

Have you ever fallen in love with a porcelain tile in a showroom, only to notice that it looks a little different once it is installed in your home? You’re not imagining this. Several factors influence how we perceive color, texture, and pattern, and understanding them can help you make a more confident tile selection.

One of the biggest factors in how a tile looks is lighting. Showrooms often feature carefully positioned lighting designed to showcase the beauty of each collection. At home, natural sunlight, shadows, and artificial lighting can dramatically change how a tile looks.

A warm beige porcelain may appear creamy in morning sunlight but take on a cooler, slightly gray tone under certain LED lights. Even the direction your windows face can influence how a color is perceived throughout the day.

Wall paint, cabinetry, countertops, and furnishings also affect how we perceive tile color. A soft taupe porcelain might appear warmer alongside white cabinetry but cooler when paired with rich wood tones. This is why choosing tile in isolation can sometimes lead to unexpected results.

The direction that tile is installed can also influence its overall appearance. Large-format porcelain with natural stone veining may look dramatically different depending on whether the pattern runs horizontally or vertically. And the same goes for whether it is install and vertically on the wall or horizontally on the floor.

Additionally, the arrangement of individual tile faces can create subtle variation and movement across a larger surface.

Whenever possible, bring tile samples into the actual space where they’ll be installed. View them during different times of day and under the lighting you plan to use. Place samples alongside cabinetry, countertops, and paint selections to see how the materials interact.

For large-format porcelain, checking out multiple tile faces together instead of just one piece in the showroom, or a looking at a larger display can provide a more realistic understanding of the finished installation.

Porcelain tile is a beautiful, versatile surface, but its appearance is influenced by all of its surroundings. Taking the time to evaluate lighting, coordinate materials, and layout before installation can help ensure that the final result is everything you envisioned.
