Designing With Organic Layered Textures

A trend has quietly and noticeably taken over in California’s 
design space. We see a shift moving into a more natural, grounded,
and neutral palette. Warm hues take up space and organic colors 
invite visual and tactile interest, while simultaneously moving away 
from the high-contrast and polished surfaces of the recent past.
In the midst of this, texture plays an important role. We see the

and materials counterbalance smooth matte surfaces. Instead of 
relying on dramatic contrasts, designers are embracing layers that

Texture is key within the design. It offers the eye subtle 
movement between similar colors and tones. The combination
creates a playful dance between a structured wall tile, a 
dimensional mosaic, and a porcelain tile mimicking natural stone. It 
lets a room feel intentional while keeping a sense of calm restraint.
Porcelain tile makes the perfect medium when trying to create 
this effect. It can take on any texture and look due to its many 
advancements in technology. The result is that it can replicate the 
effect of limestone, wood, handcrafted plaster and much more. This 
creates surfaces that feel authentic while offering durability and

Matte finishes play an important role in this trend. In the same 
way that nature rarely creates shiny surfaces, matte materials 
diffuse and filter light and offer an authentic playground for a relaxed 
and sophisticated atmosphere. This quality plays beautifully with 
today’s popular warm neutral palette of soft sand, clay, taupe and 
ivory.
