Do You Need An R11 Tile In Your Shower?

One of the most common questions we hear in the world of porcelain tile is, “What slip rating should my customer use for the shower and bathroom floor?” It’s a great question because everyone wants a shower that feels safe, but there are other factors to consider, like what makes it functionally resonant based on their lifestyle. 
 
Many people might think that a higher slip rating would be better in these bathroom settings, but that isn’t necessarily the case. Let’s take a look at what the R11 surface was designed for: areas where water is regularly present and a higher level of traction is required. Think about commercial walkways, pool surrounds, outdoor patios, or other wet exterior spaces. To get that extra grip needed, the surface is much more textured. 
 
However, inside a residential shower that same texture can become a real pain. Soap residue, body oils, shampoo, and hard water mineral deposits can settle into the tiny peaks and crevices that make the tile grippy. Even though an R11 tile can certainly be cleaned, it usually requires more work to keep looking good compared with other smoother surfaces.

These finishes provide a comfortable balance of slip resistance and ease of maintenance. When paired with grout joints created by smaller-format shower floor tiles or mosaics, they typically provide excellent footing for everyday use. 
 
Of course, every project is different. So, if someone has mobility concerns, is designing for aging in place, or simply wants additional traction, it might be worth discussing a more textured surface. In these types of situations, the decision can consider the entire bathroom design, maintenance expectations, proper drainage, grab bars, and other safety features, not just the tile’s R rating alone. 
 
The best shower design isn’t just the one with the highest slip rating. It’s the one that balances safety, comfort, maintenance, and long-term enjoyment. By understanding how different finishes are meant to perform, you can choose a tile that keeps your shower looking beautiful,  easy to care for, and functional for years to come.
